The French Bob Goes Global

The French Bob Goes Global

Parisian Chic meets 1920’s glamour as the classic cut receives a European twist while maintaining modern appeal. Messy and relaxed, we are in love with its versatile charm!

Behind the Trend

The French bob haircut is a flattering chin-length bob paired with a full fringe, which usually sits at brow level. The modern-day version features a heavy fringe with sharp ends and wavy texture. Taking inspiration from the dishevelled hairstyles of French style icons like Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin, it epitomises effortless Parisian style and is likely to be dominating the catwalks for 2020/21. Powerhouse publishers Vogue have even described it as the biggest hair trend to come out of 2020. So where did this stylish look come from? “The inspiration for the French bob comes from the 20s and 30s era,” explains expert Adam Reed to Stylist magazine. “It reminds me of Louise Brooks – it has that sultry jazz singer feel. It’s sassy and elegant.”

The Perfect Cut

The style is renowned for its versatility and suits almost anyone, depending on your clients face shape and structure. With its signature ends that slightly curve in towards the chin, it’s an especially great hairstyle to frame long and heart-shaped faces Paul Hession of Hession Hairdressing believes that “a classic French bob is best on oval faces as opposed to round faces. Graduated bobs tend to work on everyone and I’d say lobs (long bobs) are pretty universal too.”

Adam Reed also understands the route to sculpting that perfect shape, “The fringe should sit just above the brow – shorter than usual bangs but still super chic.

It’s such a great haircut to get right now as it’s a lovely move forward from the so-called “boyfriend bob” we saw last year, it’s a really nice way of updating it.

CrozNest Do’s and Don’ts

Do
  • Embrace natural texture. This cut is not designed to be perfect, so a bit of texture will add to its’ effortless charm.
  • For those without natural texture. Add soft waves to take the edge of a blunter cut and incorporate texturizing spray for a sultry tousled look – tres chic!
  • Use a volumizing mousse for extra bounce and movement.
  • Ditch the hairdryer and allow the hair to air dry for natural movement.
Don’t
  • Weigh down the bob with heavy products that will impair its movement and leave it looking lacklustre.
  • Feel the need to overindulge with accessories – let your new barnet do the talking!
  • Rely on too much product, as the cut does 80% of the work, explains Luke Hersheson, CEO of Hershesons.
