Feeling a tad bored at home during this everlasting pandemic? Tell me about it… Hold tight as we go through these fabulous braided trends for SS/20 & AW/20 shows. Who knows? Maybe you could try these looks at home? Strike a pose and take a pic to upload to stunt on your Instagram followers. Ok, so let’s get cracking!

It seems like braids, ponytails and plaits are the highlights of what’s popping for SS20 hairstyles. Plaits have been around for hundreds of years and the style still remains. This elegant yet neat look was mastered by Anthony Turner for L’Oréal Professionnel at Erdem SS20, London Fashion week. This look is simple to create and can be worn on your day off, at work and it also does the trick to keep your hair neatly tied back on a hot day. “It’s a quintessential Erdem look. It feels quite tough because of the strict centre parting and tight braid, but the big bow softens the look and makes it feel romantic,” Anthony Turner.

Tina Outen is at it again, this time she was inspired by the famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. These gorgeous plaits were demonstrated at the L’Oréal Professionnel, Bora Aksu’s SS20 show at London Fashion Week. Obviously, Kahlo has left her nostalgic essence behind as her iconic style still remains within the creative industry. You can always make this look naturally youthful, you can’t go wrong.

We move forward to the Autumn/Winter shows and notice that braids still take part of the runway! This time there’s a slight change in style… Gigi Hadid looked stunning at the AW20 Fendi show at Milan Fashion Week as her hair is put back into a braided bun showing “abstract asymmetrical sculptures and elegant twists and turns”, stylist Sam McKnight. It’s quite a unique and almost obscure look but it’s guaranteed that you will receive a couple compliments if you were to rock this style.

It’d be wrong for us to miss out the pirate braids! Sam Mcknight shows off the pirate look at the AW20 Max Mara show for Milan Fashion Week. Who knew this style could look so cool? The models make it look effortless yet so intriguing to look at, a simple braid attached with an accessory at the end to give it that extra arrrr. If Bella Hadid can pull this off, so can you!

To sum up this topic we managed to have a chat with hairstylist James Catalano who has been working amongst professional models and artist within the entertainment industry for years. I asked him the following about his experience. ‘‘James, have you seen a major impact in the use of trends with braids, plaits and ponytails in the hair industry within the last couple of years at Fashion week?’’ His response; ‘‘Braids have played a huge part in recent Fashion Week seasons, including the shows I worked on, where they were used to create intricate updos or add texture to hair. Depending on the designer’s vision, braids can either compliment or contrast the pieces, for a high-impact look.’’
