I’ll set the scene. The weather is warm, you are walking down the street
with your girlfriends, talking about the spice girls and pulling your bangs
back with a sparkly hair clip.
Well, don’t worry, the 90’s are back, and I’m not talking about the fact The
Spice Girls are touring again. It’s the return of the humble hair clip.
The use of hair clips and grips as a visual fashion aesthetic made its
reappearance on the fashion scene back in 2016, when Solange wore snap
clips to the CFDA awards. This ’90s inspired hair styling tool then began
popping up on catwalks beginning in 2017, and slowly gained traction each
year, most recently being featured by Simone Rocha, Ashley Williams and
Zadig & Voltaire at the beginning of this year.
However, with the benchmark of “what’s hot” nowadays for the everyday
viewer, steaming from the style choices and opinions of the social media
influencer, the trend popping up on various Instagram feeds is really what
has people excited to try the trend on themselves.
Using a pack of coloured grips that you can grab at Selfridges, or even
a crystal embossed Ashley Williams slide at around the £100 mark, this
trend is not only wearable, but fashionable for everyone… all budgets, all
styles, all ages and all skill levels.
With the choker still clinging on from last summer, it makes you wonder
what 90’s trend is next?
Those daily earring stickers, which would stick everywhere but your ear
lobes. Or maybe it will be mood jewellery? However, with what is happening
in the world right now, I think the moods would include “existential
dread.”, “mildly concerned” and “MOOD.”
I for one, am pretty chuffed the 90’s is back, and can appreciate the rise of
an easy to recreate trend. Bring on the next one.
